Saturday, September 18, 2004 brought people and bands from across the State of South Dakota to Pierre for the Korean War Memorial parade and dedication. Rapid City Stevens was one of the high school bands that participated in the parade and dedication ceremonies. At the end of the dedication ceremony, 26,000 balloons, each one representing a South Dakotan who served in the Korean War, was released.

Tonight we attended the Music Ministry Alive (MMA) Festival “Sing!” which is the closing concert of MMA performed by the kids attending. Once again it was a very good concert put on by a group of very talented and gifted kids.

In the first photo, you can see all the kids that participate in this program. Cathy is on the right end of the second row. In the second photo is just a close up of Cathy. And in the third, she is playing her Sax during “How Can We Be Silent?” by Michael Mahler.

Who is that in the picture? What is she doing? Yes that is Cathy being the Train Engineer on the Storybook Line. She is working at Storybook Island and one of the things she does is drive the train. To see a larger version of the photo, click on it. As you can see from the smile on her face, she is really enjoying it. Or is that just her way of acting like she doesn’t know the “weirdo” taking the picture.

So if you get to Storybook Island this summer, and you have someone small enough to ride the train, you just might know the Engineer.

This year the Rapid City Stevens High School Marching Band performed at Stevens High School Football games, marched in Colorado State University’s homecoming parade and football game, and marched in Rapid City’s Veterans Day Parade. After the parade, they performed at a free show along with Rapid City’s Central High School Band and the South Dakota State University Drum Corp.
